Procedures during Admissions
About Statuses of Residence and Visas
Once you have acquired your status of residence, please visit your nearest immigration bureau to complete all related procedures.
In addition, you must have your residence card on your person at all times while in Japan.
In cases where your stay in Japan exceeds the initial designated period due to further education, the process to extend your period of stay is required. The review process takes between two weeks and a month to complete, so please be aware of time frame and apply promptly.

As a general rule, foreigners living in Japan under the "Student" residence status are not allowed to hold part-time jobs. However, if you require financial means to be able to continue your studies, you can receive a permit for "Permission to Engage in an Activity Other Than That Permitted by the Status of Residence Previously Granted" to work part-time. The maximum work time allowed during a part-time job is 28 hours a week, or up to 8 hours a day during university-designated holidays. In addition, international students are prohibited from holding part-time jobs related to the adult-entertainment industry.

If you leave Japan for a year or longer, you are required to receive a "re-entry permit" before departure. You cannot re-enter Japan without said permit.
*Based on the revision of law on July 9th 2012, you are not required to have a re-entry permit in cases when you return to Japan within one year of departure while within your period of stay. In said situation, please fill out the "Embarkation and Disembarkation Card for Re-entrants" (ED card) and complete the "Special Re-entry System" procedure.

About National Health Insurance/Pension
For the procedure for enrollment into National Health Insurance and Pension, please visit your area's city hall/town hall as soon as possible after you have arrived in Japan.
If you are staying in Japan for more than 3 months and hold the "Student" residence status, you must enroll in National Health Insurance. If you are enrolled in National Health Insurance, patient-costs for any medical treatment will be 30% of total expenses upon presentation of your Health Insurance card. In addition, insurance holders are provided access to high-cost medical expense benefits. Once the enrollment process has been completed, your Health Insurance card will be sent to your place of residence, so please be careful not to lose it. Furthermore, you cannot lend your Health Insurance card to others. In addition, the yearly National Health Insurance tax return will also be mailed to your place of residence, so if you will still be in Japan the following year, please fill it out and send it back.
All individuals living in Japan between 20 and 60 years old are required to enroll in the National Pension. International students are included in this. However, among exchange students for whom payment of the insurance premium is difficult, there is the "Special Payment System for Students", for regular students to defer payment of insurance premiums while they are still in school, and the "National Pension Contribution Exemption/Payment Postponement" for non-regular students (special audit students, research students etc.) It is recommended that you apply for these systems with the pension application simultaneously. In addition, presentation of your student ID is required when applying, and this application must be made every year.
About Individual Number
Introduced in October 2015, this system's official name is the Social Security and Tax Number System. If you have a resident card in Japan, you are eligible for this service even if you are a foreign national. No special procedure is required; a "Notification Card" with your "Individual Number" will be mailed to you, so please be careful not to lose it. In addition, please do not share your Individual Number with others carelessly. Your Individual Number is required when completing government-related procedures or to hold a part-time job. About Student Life Support
Student discounts (student passenger fare discount cards) are issued by the certificate issuance machine. In addition, student discounts for regular passes on JR lines, the Matsura Line (MR), buses and other transportation can be issued at the Student Group, Student Support Office Reception Window.
Events and Support
The following types of support are provided to help ensure that international students have a rewarding study-abroad experience.
- Center for International Education
The Center for International Education answers questions from international students and helps them prepare for life in Japan. The Center also holds an enrollment ceremony and reception to welcome the university's international exchange students to campus, provides information on local community events and other activities, and hosts a food booth with the cooperation of the international students at the popular university festival in autumn.
- Student Support Office
The Student Support Office provides advice to international students regarding class registration, academic issues, and everyday living. The Student Support Office Student Group and the Center for International Education work together to provide international students with consultation and support regarding personal and academic issues of concern.
- Japanese Language Classes
The University offers a Japanese language class and a class on Japanese affairs (collectively worth 14 credits on the Sasebo Campus and 2 credits on the Siebold Campus) for international students to help them improve their Japanese language skills and learn about Japanese culture and literature.
- International Student Advisors
To improve communication between students and instructors, the University has introduced and "office hours system" that enables international students to seek advice at any time.
- Tutor System for International Students (Siebold Campus only)
Japanese students enrolled in the University are available to assist international students. They provide support in a wide variety of areas, including helping international students complete their foreign resident registration upon arrival in Japan, opening a bank account, and learning how to use public transportation to commute to school.
Many different organizations and private companies offer scholarships for international students. Recipients are selected based on the University's recommendation. Privately financed international students who exhibit academic excellence but are having problems making their tuition payments may be eligible for a full or partial tuition exemption. Applicants are required to fulfill the standard number of credits provided by each faculty. The type of exemption will be determined mainly by the academic performance of applicants.
- Information Provided to Students
The University's Employment Section helps students find jobs. The Employment Section posts information on job openings received from companies and government agencies via online Career Support System that all students, both Japanese and international, can access.
- Personal Guidance
Personalized guidance on how to find job is available starting from each student's first year. Advisors look at students' career aspirations from various angles - from their purposes for enrolling in the University to the topics they want to study and the skills they want to acquire. Based on the information collected, the advisors provide advice regarding the career options available.
- Certification and Skill Acquisition Support
The Employment Section holds extracurricular classes to enable students to acquire the skills they will need after graduation and to conduct a more effective job search. These classes also help students acquire many different certifications and skills.
- Job-Hunting Events
The Employment Section offers job-hunting guidance, career seminars, joint company information sessions on campus, internships and alumni presentations about their careers.
International Student Activities
At the annual Siebold Campus Festival "SUNFESTA", international students set up food stalls. They work with the Center for International Education to cook and sell spring rolls, Korean chijimi, and other international foods. The authentic flavors enjoy high popularity every year. In addition, the Sasebo Campus has their own festival called Ootorisai, which is usually held in November every year, and has many unique stalls to enjoy.
The Nagasaki International Student Support Center holds an event entitled "Nagasaki Peace Study Field Trip" (Bus Hiking) for new international students in Nagasaki twice a year. This project's aim is to provide international students with an opportunity to learn about the history of Nagasaki and reconsider the meaning of peace through accounts of atomic bomb survivors' experiences and visits to the Atomic Bomb Museum and the Nagasaki Museum of History and Culture. The tour also provides a chance to interact with international students from other universities, allowing participants to enlarge their circle of friends.
University of Nagasaki launched a cultural exchange project for international students in 2013, with the aim of enhancing their interactions with Japanese students and citizens living in Nagasaki Prefecture. International and Japanese students visited Hasami Town in the first year, Saikai City in 2014, and Isahaya City in 2015. During each event, students had increased chances for exchange with local people through lunch parties and visits to various facilities. This project also provides an opportunity for students - both international and Japanese - to interact with those from the other University campus. Students at the Sasebo Campus and the Siebold Campus rarely get a chance to meet each other. We believe that this project would not have been able to be carried out without the cooperation of local organizations. As a mission of the University, we encourage international students to actively promote their interactions with local communities.

Procedure for Returning to Home Country
When returning to your home country, please confirm and complete all procedures early enough to allow for processing. In addition, please visit the Student Support Office or The Center for International Exchange Programs and Foreign Language Education for university procedures.

When cancelling your bank account, please confirm that there are no public utilities charges on account withdrawals, and that all payments have been completed. The admission requirements for international students are detailed in the "Student Recruitment Guidelines," which are published each year. (1) If you are applying to an undergraduate program, please refer to the "Student Recruitment Guidelines (Special Selection for Self-Financed Foreign Students (Arriving in Japan/Pre-arrival))." (2) For those applying to a graduate program (master's course), consult the "Student Recruitment Guidelines (Master's Course)," and (3) If you are applying for the graduate program (doctoral course), please review the "Student Recruitment Guidelines (Doctoral Course)." (As classes are primarily conducted in Japanese, proficiency in the Japanese language is necessary when taking the entrance exams at our institution. Required certification tests may vary depending on the entrance examination category, so please check the recruitment guidelines for detailed information.)
The entrance fee for this school is 353,000 yen, and the annual tuition fee is 535,800 yen. Additionally, in the first year of enrollment, there are various additional fees, such as support association fees and insurance premiums, so you will need approximately 1 million yen.
